Velo Club Venta 2019 Criterium 2 of 3
Sunday 14th April
4th Cat only - 22 starters

Despite being a few degrees colder than most would have liked almost perfect conditions were gladly welcomed by riders for the second event in this spring crit series. For the first couple of laps it seemed that nobody was prepared to do the work on the front before the group eventually found its rhythm, I managed to mostly avoid the front but stayed in the first five or so riders for the whole race.
After the first 10 minutes, eventual winner Max Flesher tested the group with a small acceleration. While not quite full gas, his surge was enough to break away from the peloton and, with me in tow, strung the group out and put the hurt on some struggling riders. We worked well off the front together, not fully committing to the break but still forcing the group to chase. After a few laps and an unsuccessful bridge attempt to get to us we decided that two of us wasn't enough to hold off the chasers, especially since we both fancied our chances in a bunch sprint, and returned to the pack.
For the rest of the race, the remaining ten riders rolled fairly steadily around the circuit, with a few riders trying their luck attacking on the dragging incline out of the last corner. However none were successful and when it came to 5 laps to go, we were still all together. The pace continued steady and would end in a bunch sprint.
Max Flesher lit up an impressive sprint to take the victory, whilst behind I managed to recover from accidentally unclipping my foot on the last corner to sprint for third.
